Variable Voltage (VV) vs Variable Wattage (VW) Vaping Devices
If you’ve come here to read this you probably are a little bit confused about the world of variable wattage and variable voltage. Back in the early days of vaping it was easy, you had a battery, you push the button, and vapor would come out. Then devices that allowed you to adjust the voltage output of your battery were introduced. These were a great leap forward in vaping technology because they allowed you to personalize your vaping experience, and let you adjust vapor output more freely. More recently variable wattage devices have come on the scene. This has allowed users the ability to fine-tune their vaping experience better than ever before.
Before I get started I would like to say that variable voltage and variable wattage are just opposite sides of the same coin. As demonstrated by the formula Volts2 / Resistance(ohms) = Watts . Because the relationship between Watts and volts is expressed as a formula when you adjust for one the other automatically changes. One of the biggest confusions that people have that I come across when I talk to them about variable voltage and variable wattage devices, is that they think that you have to adjust both parameters. When in reality you adjust one of the parameters and the other is what it is based on the mathematical formula.
If you are new to vaping and have been using cig-a-like device that you purchased from a local convenience store or a starter ego battery then the idea of adjusting wattage or voltage might seem daunting. When in reality it is not that difficult and when you begin to play with it a little you quickly find that it is an option that provides you with much more enjoyment.
Intro to OHM’s Law
To understand the concept of variable voltage and variable wattage first need to understand 0HM’s law in relation to the resistance of your heating element. Determining the resistance of a heating element
If you walk into a vape shop you have already found out that there are now many different types of heating almonds to choose from. All of these heating elements have a resistance factor to them a lower resistance level implies that a higher amount of amps will be able to freely pass through it.
Variable voltage in vaping
I begin by talking about variable voltage because this is what came first. At the time most heating elements had a resistance somewhere between two and 2.5. You could adjust the variable voltage to discharge more volts than your standard battery. You would have to play with the output setting and find an output that provided you with the best vapor production and flavor expression without setting it so high that you caused your heating element to burn up and leave your vapor tasting burnt. Most people never understood about Ohm’s law and would just start low and increase the voltage output until they find their ideal spot. But you quickly found that as soon as you changed your eliquid you would have to adjust your voltage again to find which voltage output provided you with the best flavor and vapor experience. Also even if you used the same eliquid and just change heating elements that had a different resistance level again so you would have to play with your voltage output to find which output worked best. Although this is definitely a step up from not being able to adjust the voltage, it is not super easy either. For us that went through that it seemed like great fun at the time.
Variable wattage in vaping
Not too long ago devices appeared on the scene that allowed you to adjust for wattage. Vaping took another huge leap forward. A good way I’ve heard it explained is that wattage is equivalent to what temperature your heating coil will reach to transform your vape juice into vapor. And voltages the amount of energy your pushing into the heating element. If you want a simpler vaping experience then you probably want to focus on temperature output and not energy input. That’s why adjusting for wattage is so wonderful. Once you know what wattage works best for your different vape juice is, you can focus on setting your device to a certain wattage every time you vape a certain eliquid. With variable wattage devices your volts will automatically adjust and you can easily switch out heating elements with different resistance levels while maintaining a consistent wattage output.
Variable wattage is considered easier to use because you can maintain the same temperature output across different heating elements and you don’t have to calculate what voltage to use to get it. It is less confusing than accounting for the resistance of your heating element and adjusting voltage to get your desired wattage. You can set your wattage and not worrying about the other factors. Most of the newer advance personal vaporizers (APV’s) have incorporated variable wattage settings into their systems because it makes vaping easier for people who do not want the confusion of adjusting voltage every time they change their heating element to obtain the same wattage level. It’s not to say that the variable voltage is bad, it only takes an extra moment to manually adjust your voltage output to a level that provides you with your desired paper and flavor output.
